I have begun my CAD work for the pieces of the modular system I am working on. I have ordered 2 types of magnets to be embedded in my 3D prints for testing, and I have ordered 1/4" loose ball bearings as the joining mechanisms. The loose ball bearings will act as a free joint when one is used, a hinge when 2 are connected and a solid joint when 3 are connected. I think this will increase the ease of building with the system and it will allow for quick prototyping. I should get the loose ball bearings in by tomorrow or Friday.
I have also bought the base light that I will be using for the pendant light kit, I have 2 lamp ideas so far, but I feel that once I start playing with the printed parts I will get a better idea of what is possible.
it has been difficult trying to make a quick prototype that mimics the same flexibility and magnetism that the final pieces will have. I have made popcicle sticks with a central pivot point that can act as a prototype for now to show ideas for the structure of the pendent light kit. Clay prototypes have been made to show more detais on the individual pieces but do not work well for multi-component prorotyping. Idealy I will start 3D printing soon so I can experiment more with what types of structures can be made from this system.
As I started the CAD work I made a mood baord to get into the mindset for the aesthetics of the project.
