March 19: Met with Kathleen Dorner and Mona Lamontagne who are architects for the NCC, they design accessible outhouses used in Gatineau parks. This meeting was very beneficial as I was able to discover new materials such as densilite, reinforced fiberglass grid structure, fiberglass with foam sandwich.
Some minor details in my floorplan needed to be revisted,. It was a good learning opportunity to see how people in the working world approach designing washrooms, how many materials they consider before spec-ing the most appropriate material, issues they face, and what solutions they use, what work and didn't.
For example porous materials end up very nasty when used for washroom settings. Concrete, and wood floors end up absorbing nasty smells and liquids. Also i learned that when dealing with floor drainage, they incorporate a slope towards the door for any liquids to "flow" out.
